You may find as your 40th birthday approaches that you are less able to be as physically active as you once were. Maybe you were in a softball league or loved to play volleyball but those activities hurt and put more of a strain on your body these days. For however difficult it may be to give the activities that you use to love up it is even more important that you replace them with something. That is why yoga is an ideal alternative for women in their 40’s not only for physical health but for mental health and self-esteem as well.

Yoga was specifically designed for the health of your mind and finding out how you can remain in tune with your body and its needs. That is why it is perfect for women in their 40’s because at this age it is of the utmost importance that you listen to and understand the changes that are going on in your body.

Unfortunately around the age of 40 is when our body starts to replace its muscle building ability with fat retention in order to keep us provided with the fuel we need as we age. Yoga is all about building long and lean muscle without strenuous weight lifting or anything like that. Longer leaner muscle like the kind Yoga can produce is actually more ideal for you at this age because it forms quicker and does not take too much physical capacity.

You have probably noticed that your posture is not what it used to be. Still it is imperative to the health of our spine, which naturally degenerates as we grow older, to engage in activities like Yoga that will improve your posture, keep your spine straight and increase your range of motion.

The risk of injury grows correlatively as we age but keeping your joints healthy and flexible is the best way to avoid injury in your 40’s and beyond. Yoga will help your muscles remain in a limber state so that injury caused by tense muscles is much less likely.

So what does all this mean for your mind? Think about the most confident person you know. They probably have great posture, are physically capable and always seem refreshed. Yoga can do all of these things for you. Yoga teaches you to breathe the proper way which provides much needed oxygen to the most important part of your body, your brain. This will help you think clearer, assess problems more rationally and give you a better outlook of your surroundings. Those who practice Yoga also tend to feel much better about their bodies which invariably leads to a great self-image and high self-esteem.
